Louisiana is showing signs of being among the first of the Deep South states to legalize online sports betting though it currently remains prohibited. R.S. 27:201 et seq.Sports Betting: Louisiana voters passed a resolution to allow fantasy league wagers, but, unfortunately, the movement failed to make it through the legislature. (HB 153). As a result, both online and off-line sports betting remain illegal in Louisiana for the time being. Interested individuals may want to follow this and any other pending Louisiana legislation on this topic as passage of new legislation on this topic and the opening of sports betting platforms to Louisiana residents is imminent.
Race Betting: Like in many states, horse betting is legal in Louisiana at its racing tracks as well as other venues that allow simulcast pari-mutuel betting. The licensed domestic platforms of TGV, BetAmerica, and TwinSpires among others all operate in the state.
Online Gambling & Gaming: Although Louisiana has criminalized online gambling and gaming of all sorts (regardless of the requirement for skill) since 1997, no charges have ever been brought.
